Hazardous/special waste regulations
Special Waste Regulations 1996
Until 2005 (see below), these regulations ensured the UK conformed to EU legislation on hazardous wastes. One interesting development when these regulations were in place the European Commission revised its list of hazardous waste, adding waste not previously considered to be hazardous, including televisions, computer monitors, fluorescent lighting and end-of-life vehicles.
Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005
These regulations replaced the Special Waste Regulations and in effect made the term ‘special waste’ obsolete from a legal point of view, although it is still widely used across the waste management sector.
The regulations are relevant for anyone who produces hazardous waste as part of their business processes and include a requirement for most waste producers to notify their premises to the Environment Agency.
